Scheer pushed through a renaming; brought in Larry Brown, the coach he had worked with during his tenure with the since-folded Carolina Cougars; and shocked the basketball world with his signing of prized college star Bobby Jones in 1974, plus David Thompson and Marvin Webster in 1975. Dan Issel also came from the Kentucky Colonels in a 1975 trade, and the Nuggets packed the new McNichols Sports Arena, originally envisioned as the anchor for the 1976 Winter Olympics awarded to Colorado.
