46 Comfort’s campaign against the atomic bomb started in 1945, and, as part of his work through the 1940s and 1950s, he pioneered the ‘new’ social-scientific approach to anarchism. The wider nuclear disarmament movement began to mobilize in 1957 in response to the British government’s plans to develop the hydrogen bomb. At the end of that year the Direct Action Committee (DAC) against nuclear war was formed and began direct action and industrial campaigns against the manufacture, testing and deployment of nuclear weapons.

His art criticism over the first half of the twentieth century was aimed at interpreting aesthetic modernism as a medium for radical and idealistic renewal. 29 In 1921, taking on the editorship of the works of T. E. Hulme, who was killed in the First World War, Read was exposed to a distinctive modernist case which emphasized the aesthetics of rational geometric form. The ideas of Hulme were at the heart of the English avant-garde of the early twentieth century and an important influence on Read’s contemporaries Wyndham Lewis, Ezra Pound and T.

This was the crucial underpinning for the political significance Read attributed to the spontaneous forms and harmonies of art. He stated it in these terms: ‘The most general law in nature is equity – the principle of balance and symmetry which guides the growth of forms along lines of the greatest structural efficiency. ’5 He also drew from the anarchist tradition a Proudhonian emphasis on the division and decentralization of political power and its dissolution in local and direct forms of social administration.
