Now an alternative set of ideas exists, a new way of viewing the world, that has arisen out of the serious, painstaking, and often inspired, research of the early chaos pioneers. Chaos encouraged holistic thinking in science and it brought together a whole range of disciplines that were heading down their own exclusive paths. Furthermore, as Gleick (1993) points out, the discoveries of the chaos scientists were not only new but were often new ways of understanding old ideas. Others like Einstein, Poincaré and Maxwell had seen many of the aspects of chaos but these had then been forgotten.

It implies more than spatial relationships. One senses a mysterious, unifying rhythm at work between all the entities within a system and again this resonates with aspects of chaos theory. Conclusion This chapter has explored the development of the new sciences of chaos and complexity and some of their main features in order to devise a framework within which to explore the world of organizations and organizational life. Furthermore, Descartes saw a huge gap between the mind and the body and argued that they should be treated as separate entities. Again, this is a view which is reflected in many approaches to activity even today, as witnessed by the very different roles of blue (body) and white (mind) collar workers. As regards science, the work of Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo transformed mankind’s view of itself and its place in the universal scheme of things.
